Ingredients

  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 burger buns
  • Lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles for serving

Method

  1. Prepare the base: In a large bowl, mash 1.5 cans of black beans with a fork, leaving some chunks for texture. Keep 0.5 can of beans whole and add to the mashed beans.
  2. Sauté vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook diced onion, garlic, and bell pepper for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  3. Combine ingredients: Add the sautéed vegetables to the beans along with oats, breadcrumbs, tomato paste, soy sauce, and all spices. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  4. Form patties: Let mixture rest for 10 minutes to absorb moisture. Form into 4 equal patties, about 3/4 inch thick. Refrigerate for 15 minutes to firm up.
  5. Cook patties: Heat remaining olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and heated through.
  6. Assemble: Toast buns lightly. Place patties on buns and top with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, and desired condiments.
  7. Serve: Serve immediately with sweet potato fries or your favorite side dish.Retry
