  • 4 medium onions yellow, sweet, or white
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 garlic cloves crushed (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh herbs thyme, rosemary, or parsley

Method
 

  1. Peel the onions and cut them in halves or quarters if desired.
  2. Bring water to a boil in a medium pot and add salt.
  3. Add the onions to the boiling water and reduce to a simmer.
  4. Cook for 15–20 minutes until the onions are tender but not mushy.
  5. Drain the onions and return them to the pot.
  6. Add butter, garlic, pepper, and herbs, then toss gently to coat.
